About the Centre

A community-owned project where people come to live, share ideas, learn and grow together — empowering the underprivileged rural population, especially women and youths.

Background

From a Common Initiative Group to a recognised association.

The Rural Transformation Centre was set up in 1995 to serve surrounding communities on sustainable agriculture, environmental protection and health enhancement through natural medicine — all geared towards improving rural livelihoods.

It began as a Common Initiative Group (Reg. NW/GP/05/96/1281) and in 2014 transformed into an association (Reg. N° 17/AR/E.26/A2/PS/118), legally recognised by the Government of Cameroon. The association is apolitical, non-denominational and not-for-profit.

“While I had a very happy life with a huge family to feed, I was troubled because almost everyone in my community was poor.”

— Mr. Litika Boniface, Founder & Coordinator
The founder

The story of a Gateway from trade to transformation.

It started when Mr. Litika Boniface created a farm project in the early 1990s, naming it the Sharon Farms. As a young man he had worked tirelessly in Nigeria before returning to Cameroon to build a business.

His enterprise — the popular “Gateway Shop” — grew into one of the biggest shops around, even as he braved attacks from armed bandits on his trading journeys. Yet the poverty surrounding him weighed heavily, and he chose to close that flourishing business to found this Centre.

Our approach

Community demand-driven. Locally resourced. Long-term.

Together with community members, we work towards improving livelihoods through sustainable projects whose impacts are long-term, directly felt in the community, and built on local services and resources.
